Brentwood School in Los Angeles, California is seeking a Director of Advancement who will build a sector-leading institutional advancement function, upgrade the school's marketing and fundraising infrastructure, manage capital and endowment campaigns, and drive the annual fund.
Brentwood School was founded in 1972 as a co-educational college preparatory middle and upper school, and has expanded to be a well respected K-12 independent school. Brentwood School occupies two campuses. The Lower Division includes grades K-6 and occupies a 2.5 acre campus, while the Middle and Upper Divisions share a 30 acre campus located a half mile away. The School serves just under 1000 students, the vast majority of whom are the first in their families to attend an independent school. Brentwood School is a financially strong institution with an annual budget of $34 million, an endowment of $7.7 million, and a reserve of $2 million. The facilities are adequate to the current needs of the students; that said, it is clear that the facilities are crowded and expansion of the physical plant is required. An expansion plan involving significant construction has been developed and construction is expected in the next several years.
Brentwood boasts a strong academic program staffed by 110 full-time and 16 part-time teachers, and offers a traditional liberal arts curriculum of more than 100 classes each year, including advanced placement courses in 17 subject areas. There is an extensive athletics program that fields 67 athletic teams in the Middle and Upper School Divisions, and 19 teams in the Lower Division. A strong education in the visual and performing arts is provided to students through programs in dance, drama, studio art, instrumental and vocal music, and through the integration of art and cultural history into the academic curriculum. Learning, while also serving the community, is essential to every student's experience.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of Advancement will provide the overall leadership, direction, coordination and vision for all marketing, communications and fundraising activities of the school. The Advancement Department consists of five full-time staff and coordinates all fundraising activities of the Board, the Head of School, other senior staff, parent, alumni and volunteers. The Director of Advancement will work with the Head of School, the Board's leadership and Advancement Department staff to review, enhance and implement an appropriate marketing and fundraising infrastructure scaled to the ongoing funding needs of Brentwood School. The Director of Advancement will work with these same constituencies to continually evolve and upgrade the department's structure, configuration, processes and systems until Brentwood's Advancement function is deemed to be a national model within the independent school community.
