INDIANAPOLIS MUSEUM OF ART
Indianapolis, IN

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Over the last 127 years, the IMA has built a solid reputation regionally, and in the last decade has increasingly taken a position of national and international prominence as a museum on the leading edge of innovative practices. The Museum is rich in diverse quality experiences for visitors including 141,037 square feet of interior exhibition space in the main building and over 152 acres of gardens and exterior space. The recently expanded main museum structure houses an encyclopedic collection of more than 54,000 works spanning 5,000 years. Its outstanding collection includes significant works by Gauguin and the School of Pont-Aven, Neo-Impressionism including works by Georges Seurat and his followers; the largest collection of paintings by J.M.W. Turner outside Great Britain; Old Master paintings; an outstanding collection of Japanese Edo-period paintings; a Chinese Art collection; more than 2,000 objects in the African art collection; West Asian rugs; a contemporary studio glass and a rapidly evolving collection of leading contemporary artists.

Adjacent to the main building, the IMA recently opened the 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park which was designed to strengthen the public's understanding of the relationships between contemporary art and the natural world. The Park includes 100 acres of woodlands, wetlands, meadows and a 35-acre lake, and features the ongoing commissioning of site-specific artworks. Also located on the IMA Campus is the magnificent Oldfields'Lilly House and Gardens, a 26-acre historic estate and house museum.

Located in Columbus 45 miles from the IMA's main campus is the Miller House & Garden, the unsurpassed example of mid-century modernist architecture and landscape design. This recently acquired treasure was designed by Eero Saarinen and features interiors by Alexander Girard and landscape design by Daniel Urban Kiley.

About 375,000 visitors and 6,500 member households benefit from the museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions annually; approximately 280 staff members manage and support the IMA operations. The annual operating budget is stable at about $22,000,000. The endowment of the IMA is $324m, which currently funds about 70%, or between $16m and $17m of the annual budget, with the balance developed through memberships (about $500k), earned income ($2.7 million) and contributed sources ($2 million). Admittance to the IMA is free to the public.

The IMA is currently planning an endowment campaign with the support of Grenzebach Glier and Associates. Museum leadership is looking to more than double annual private support and is anticipating that the campaign can be used as a catalyst to strengthen and evolve its annual fundraising model and establish a foundation for future philanthropic growth.

Reporting to the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the IMA, the Chief Development Officer provides the leadership, management and coordination for the IMA's broad-based individual and institutional fundraising efforts and membership activities. The Chief Development Officer devises and implements strategies leading to the museum's increasing self-sufficiency through annual support, major and capital gifts, membership, foundation and government grants, corporate partnerships, planned gifts and special events. To this end, the Chief Development Officer will view all the organization's activities, programs, exhibitions, and resources as fundraising opportunities.

The Chief Development Officer will be a hands-on and deeply involved fundraiser and is expected to build upon the team of eight fundraising professionals, growing capacity and enhancing the skills required to achieve the Museum's aspirations. The Museum's Director and CEO and his senior staff, the Chair of the Board of Governors and members of the board, and the professional staff, expect to be leveraged in fundraising efforts. Engagement with curators, affiliate groups and volunteers will be important in leveraging the resources of the department and deepening donor connections to programmatic and curatorial goals. This is a "roll up your sleeves" organization, and the Chief Development Officer will help to coach the organization's leaders, staff and board members in how to integrate a fundraising perspective into all aspects of the IMA's exhibitions, programs and operations.
