SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART
San Antonio, TX

DIRECTOR

The San Antonio Museum of Art opened in 1981 after an extensive renovation of the historic Lone Star Brewery. The encyclopedic museum is set in a 14 acre campus strategically located on the famed San Antonio River Walk in an area of historic importance that is undergoing considerable urban transformation.

The collection is diverse and well-rounded, particularly considering the relative youth of the institution. The collections include 25,000 objects reflecting the art and cultural history of peoples around the world among them one of the most comprehensive collections of Latin American art in the United States. The Latin collection includes over 7,000 objects and provides an overview of over 3,000 years of artistic expression from Mexico , Central and South America, and many countries of the Caribbean. The Western Antiquities collection spans 4,000 years and the diverse history of the classical western world. It is one of the most comprehensive collections of ancient Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek and Roman art in the southern United States. SAMA’s Asian art collection enjoys an international reputation for its excellence and depth and is housed in the new Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Art Wing. The American Art collection includes fine landscapes and portraits dating from the Colonial Period to the early Twentieth century. The Contemporary Art collection includes significant works by pioneering abstract artists of the 20th century, figurative, representational and narrative works including a recently acquired “story quilt†by the distinguished African American artist Faith Ringgold. Additionally there is a European Painting and Sculpture Collection includes Italian, French Dutch and British works from the 17th through the 20th centuries, and an Oceanic Art Collection.

The Museum has a $4.5 million annual operating budget, 50 full time staff, including 4 curatorial and 3 education professionals, 10 part time staff and over 100 volunteers serving in various capacities throughout the year. Annual attendance is about 100,000 visitors, not including those taking part in the organization’s various education programs. The endowment amounts to about $40 million.

The Kelso Director will lead and financially strengthen the San Antonio Museum of Art as it continues its evolution as a unique institution that celebrates and explores diverse classical and contemporary art from around the world. Reporting to the Board, the Director is accountable for managing all aspects of the museum’s exhibitions and operations, and for implementing and continually updating the Strategic Plan that sets objectives through 2013.
