The Executive Director will strengthen the organization, its board, programs and funding, and help the Pearl Family to transition the Foundation beyond being a family run institution.
Daniel Pearl is known to the world as the American journalist who was kidnapped in Pakistan and murdered by extremists. In life, Daniel earned respect on both sides of the East-West divide. Seen by colleagues as a journalist with a commitment to truth, fairness and human values, he was dedicated to understanding diverse communities and viewpoints, and he helped to bring that sensibility to others through his reporting and music.
The mission of the Daniel Pearl Foundation is to unite people of different cultures and religions in a commitment to pursue justice through dialogue and open contact with one another. The Foundation does this by encouraging open and vigorous dialogue; ethical journalism that emphasizes facts, balance, human values and justice; and by promoting musical performances that speaks to our common humanity and awakens in us a compassion for others.
While a commitment to open dialogue and cultural exchange will not alone end conflict, it inspires peoples to develop a cross-cultural mindset and an appreciation of others. Societies that value diversity make the world a safer and better place. In life Daniel Pearl worked toward this end, and this remains the work of the Daniel Pearl Foundation.
The Executive Director will positively influence the Daniel Pearl Foundation’s future by:
Initially reporting to the Board through Judea and Ruth Pearl, the Founding Executive Director will work with the Pearl Family and all Board Members over the next years to develop new Foundation Bylaws and transition to a non-family Board President. The Executive Director will provide the creativity and programmatic and fundraising leadership needed to ensure that the Foundation’s vision is advanced, while managing the organization in a fiscally sound manner.
