Children’s Defense Fund – Texas

Houston, TX

Executive Director, Texas

m/Oppenheim Associates is assisting the Children’s Defense Fund in the search for the Texas Executive Director. For more information please see the complete Position Description.

Children’s Defense Fund Texas (CDF-TX) was established in 1999 with the dual objective of continuing to broaden CDF’s advocacy for children nationally, and to adapt its programs for deployment in Texas and other states with a low-tax/low-government-support approach to serving children. The organization has pursued these objectives by: raising awareness about the condition of disadvantaged Texas children, working with diverse partners statewide to develop policy solutions and legislative action that helps children, and by connecting disadvantaged children to nonprofit and government sponsored programs that address various needs. The organization currently has a staff of 8 professionals in Austin, Houston and McAllen (in South Texas along the border with Mexico), and is supported by an Advisory Board of business, nonprofit and civic leaders.

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) was founded in 1973 by Marian Wright Edelman, the first African American woman admitted to The Mississippi Bar. After working with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the Poor People’s Campaign of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, she founded CDF as a voice for children adversely impacted by poverty, discrimination and lack of a safe environment.
