St. Luke’s Health Initiatives

Phoenix, AZ

President and Chief Executive Officer

St. Luke’s Health Initiatives is a Phoenix-based public foundation focused on health policy and advancing strategies that foster healthy individuals and communities in Arizona. The organization is widely respected and nonpartisan, and is guided by a philosophy that emphasizes building on the strengths of communities to shape policy and program approaches.

SLHI pursues this mission through the following core strategies:

  • Community Development. SLHI focuses on community development and increasing the organizational capacity of emerging and established non-profit organizations to work individually and collaboratively to improve community health. This work includes a range of community-based initiatives as well as SLHI’s substantial technical assistance programs.
  • Health Policy and Education. SLHI’s health policy and education arm is dedicated to conducting relevant and timely policy research; providing balanced information and perspectives on health issues in Arizona; serving as a convener and forum for the critical discussion of those issues in an independent and politically-neutral setting; and translating good ideas into action through the support of community-based initiatives.
  • Communications. SLHI is an important voice on health and health care issues in Arizona, providing timely commentary on key health issues and in-depth policy analysis, while also supporting the efforts of partner organizations to develop cogent and compelling messaging around critical health issues in Arizona.

The current board of 26 trustees oversees a public foundation with a corpus of approximately $100 million and nine staff. In fiscal year 2012, SLHI awarded approximately $1.7 million in community grants, directed $2.3 million to its technical assistance, community development, and health policy work; and provided $475,000 in direct medical assistance. The organization has a strong governance model, with the Board providing responsibility for strategic oversight, lending expertise and other support, while the CEO leads the organization and professional staff in managing and executing its work.
