Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) seeks the museum’s next Executive Director. Please click to view the full position description or to nominate/apply.
BIMA opened to the public in June 2013 and is located across from Seattle and accessible via a 30-minute ferry ride. Bainbridge Island is in Kitsap County, has a population of just under 25,000, and receives a huge influx of almost 250,000 visitor trips annually (visitors stay an average stay of 3.5 days).
BIMA attendance is about 100,000 annually – 90% of this is by visitors to the island who come once or twice annually, while residents visit the Museum frequently and view it as a community hub. The Museum is financially strong with an annual budget currently of about $2.4m funded by contributions and earned income driven by retail and rentals (all ticketing is free). There is a 22-member Board, 38 employees (19 full-time and 19 part-time), and 1,500 active members.
BIMA’s unique positioning as an art museum includes that this museum advances the art and artists of the Puget Sound Region, and the museum also has a collection of Artists Books of international significance. Tourism makes BIMA an important regional economic driver for Kitsap County, so the museum is of vital importance to this part of Washington state.
Reporting to the Board, the Executive Director is accountable for managing all staff, finances and all aspects of the Museum’s day-to-day operations, including exhibitions, collections, education and public programming, earned and contributed revenue generation, and evolving and implementing a strategic plan that the Board embraces. The Executive Director will be BIMA’s leading advocate, ambassador and fund raiser, and will be a socially involved and active partner to the Board and broader constituents, particularly those on Bainbridge Island, in Kitsap County and across Puget Sound. That said, the identity of the museum and the performance of the staff is satisfying to the Board, so the next Executive Director will assume leadership of a high-functioning team.
