United States Artists invests in America’s most accomplished artists highlighting the value of artists, their art and the process of art-making to our society. The organization’s principal activity is the USA Fellowship Program which provides annual $50,000 unrestricted awards to individual artists across all disciplines, career stages and states and territories of the United States of America. Awardees are drawn from a pool of artists nominated by an annually changing group of experts in the arts and selected by review panels of top arts professionals.
A Fellows and Alumni Advisory Council representing each of the arts disciplines has been formed to explore how United States Artists can deliver more value to working artists, while also extending the arts support ecosystem in ways that directly benefit artists. USA has access to and engages an ever-expanding pool of USA Fellows, jury panelists, and friends to continually foster an empowering circle of mutual support, funding and intellectual exchange.. A recent USA innovation, The Artists Assembly, further expands opportunities for artists, funders and arts influencers to help United States Artists in the effort to draw more attention and funding to working artists.
Currently headquartered in Chicago, USA has invested $21 million in 450 artists working in nine disciplines: architecture and design, crafts, dance, literature, media, music, theater and performance traditional arts and visual arts. The annual operating budget is $4.3 million, of which $2.5 million is distributed to artists in the form of fellowships to support art-makers across all disciplines. USA has a $13 million permanent endowment dedicated to fellowship funding only, and is currently raising a $20 million operating endowment led by a $10 million challenge grant from the Ford Foundation. $17 million of the $20 million has already been committed by individual and foundation donors. With a staff of 5, USA remains committed to a lean operational base and maximum application of donor contributions to support artists and their work.
