DISCOVERY is an informal educational resource focused on exposing children to the sciences, arts and humanities. Founded in 1990, in 2013 the Museum moved to the Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center in the heart of downtown Las Vegas, a $50m, 58,000 sq. ft., state of the art facility consists of three floors of new exhibits surrounding a three-story climbing maze that integrates diverse exhibits into an organized tangle of fun. The Museum has received numerous awards and has gained strong financial support from individual and institutional funders across Southern Nevada.
The organization has 45 full-time and 25 part-time staff with approximately 160 youth and 70 adult volunteers providing a wide variety of support to the institution and its visitors. The Board is currently in the process of evolving from an operating Board to a governing and fundraising Board. Currently, the board has approximately 30 members, 10 of whom serve on the Executive Committee. With an annual budget of $4.1m, 69% of its operating budget is funded through earned income, and 31% through contributed income. Museum attendance in the fiscal year 7/1/13 – 6/30/14 was over 322,000 and FY 2015 is expected to reach 300,000 visitors. DISCOVERY Children’s Museum is a member of the Association of Children’s Museums and the Association of Science – Technology Centers.
DISCOVERY has entered its new era of community service with strong financial management and controls, a positive balance sheet, an excellent facility, proven Board leadership and a talented staff. Going forward, the CEO and staff will work together with the Board to execute a strategic plan focused on education excellence and growth. Accordingly, effective fundraising is viewed as being an essential element for the Museum’s success.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will lead and financially strengthen DISCOVERY Children’s Museum as it ignites a love of lifelong learning through innovative, exciting, engaging, fun and enriching educational experiences for children, their educators and families. Reporting to the Board, the CEO is accountable for managing all aspects of the museum’s exhibitions, education and public programming, finances and operations, and for ensuring that the DISCOVERY Children’s Museums is a “must-visit” Las Vegas institution.
